Locked Out, but Locked In

  • admin

A summer internship in the nation’s capital, a time for interesting conversation and the chance to open doors to a bright future. Funny that somehow, Kirby and I ended up locked out on our first day.

Let me rewind. Our first day was rather different from that of a generic internship depicted in movies. We didn’t make copies, coffee, or awkward conversation. Kirby and I began by exploring the Dupont neighborhood and checking out some of Rosemary’s favorite stops. We also got the chance to play with some tech toys. We took the camera around town and got into a competition to take the greatest photos.

Upon returning to the office, we realized we were locked out of the building and left stranded until Woojae, a Double R Productions Assistant, came to the rescue. Most interns may have received a lecture, but we were just taught the code. We continued with a photo shoot, followed by an opportunity to post on the company social media.

Throughout the day, we met the staff at Double R, which felt more like meeting a family, or the parts of a well-running machine, maybe somewhere in between. The day was nothing like I anticipated. In no way do I mean it wasn’t challenging. I got to 10,000 steps before noon by venturing around the area and had to adjust to a new environment. However, it’s worth it considering Kirby and I are already preparing for live-coverage shoots next week and many other creative challenges.

Clearly, Kirby and I have a long way to go. Fortunately, the staff at Double R Productions is going catch us if, actually when, we fall… or at least open the door if we get locked out again.  With the entire summer ahead of us and projects piling up, we can only prepare ourselves for what might be our best summer yet.
