Since being promoted to an apprentice, I have many more responsibilities at Double R Productions. One of these responsibilities includes teaching our new intern, Seulah Jang. Passing along knowledge is the best way to evaluate whether or not you know what you are doing. Well, I am not the best at explaining things because I tend to interpret information differently from others. Shamefully, I can admit that teaching is one of my weaknesses, but as an apprentice, this is the perfect time for me to work and develop my teaching and communications skills.
For the spring semester, the apprentices are assigned to teach the intern. When it was time for me to teach, I was completely nervous. I wanted to make sure that I was using the correct terms and didn’t misinform Seulah. After the completion of the assignment, I felt a little bit at ease, but I still go back and forth with her to make sure that I did not forget to mention some information that is critical for her success in this internship program at Double R.
While teaching the new intern, I learned some new lessons myself. The first thing I learned was how to relax in tense situations and be comfortable under pressure. Not every situation in life is going to be comfortable. Having the responsibility to ensure that the intern can effectively perform the daily requirements for the internship was not a pleasant situation for me. As an individual, I know that I have to learn how to become comfortable with being uncomfortable. The more adaptable and flexible I am, the more opportunities will be available to me. The next thing I learned is the importance of proofreading my work. If you don’t proofread your work, someone can misinterpret what you are trying to say. The final thing I learned is engaging the audience. When observing the intern while she completes her assignments, I noticed that she could instantly remember the knowledge that I had effectively taught. Furthermore, I believe that having this experience of teaching another person will assist in my personal and professional career.
