Directing: It’s only the beginning…

When I learned that Double R was a woman owned company, I knew I wanted to work with them. It is not as common to find influential women in this industry, but as an aspiring filmmaker (and I happen to be a female) it is always great to discover role models whom I can relate to. And there is no better place to get this opportunity than a woman-run production company. Rosemary Reed, owner & president of Double R Productions, has been in the media industry for over 30 years. She started in radio and quickly made her way into the video world.

Though, on a larger scale, the 2010 Oscars also induced a rush of inspiration and hope when filmmaker Kathryn Bigelow won Best Director and Best Picture for The Hurt Locker. Whether it’s the lavish and fantastic style of Hollywood, a news station, documentary production house or a prominent media production company in DC like Double R, women play a major role and need to be acknowledged for their work. Despite the lack of recognition in archives such as the National Film Registry, women are still making their mark. From Cine Eagles to Telly Awards to Academy Awards, female filmmakers are gradually getting the credit they deserve.

Just because we are finally making a little bit of progress doesn’t mean we have officially won the battle. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. Now that a national event like the Oscars brought attention to this topic, it is necessary to keep pushing it.
