I Should Have Brought My Lunch

  • admin

Mondays are typically my wrap-up day, where I complete any tasks that may not have been completed before the weekend, and I’m usually gone by noon or so to head to programming events with The Washington Center. Well, this Monday took me for a loop. I looked over at the clock at 11:51 as I finished scrolling through some old emails and began to gather my things. As I stuck my folder in my bag, I heard the faint sound of angry voices outside of the window. Instantly, I dropped everything and shouted at Asia, “grab the camera! Lets go get this!” We scuffled to get everything together and flew down the stairs.

By the time we actually got downstairs, the protestors supporting freedom for Tibet had already made their way under the bridge and were slowly getting further and further out of sight. Asia yelled, “Come on Bri! We have to hurry or we are going to lose them!” and before I knew it, she was running in full speed! It was at that moment that I thought to myself “I knew I should have brought lunch,” and I went running after Asia in an attempt to catch up.

I ran…and I ran…

I kept my eye focused on Asia’s red coat and the neon colored flags that the protestors were holding. I was a jaywalking, traffic-dodging daredevil. I shoved people, I cursed, I was on a mission and nothing was going to stop me. At some point, I lost sight of Asia and the protestors, and I became frightened because I had no idea where I was and how to get back to the office. Just as I began to keep running straight, while I quickly prayed that I didn’t get too lost, I could hear Asia calling my name from across the street. I ran across the street waving, and nearly lost my life to a little Honda Civic, where I could see the protestors marching further away. “We are here! We made it! Now lets go see what this is about,” said Asia. “I knew I should have brought lunch,” I thought as my boiling adrenaline began to settle.

There’s nothing like my hunger for a good story.
