It all started Tuesday afternoon. Producer Catherine Baum here Double R suggested that Adeja and I cover a Pope related event while he visited DC. From there Adeja started looking up details to find out what we could cover. We decided the Papal Parade would be best, and from there we made a call sheet and plans were finalized. Early Wednesday morning we found ourselves in a line going through a high security check to get as close to the the star of the show as possible.
We shot B-Roll, interviews, and our own standup pieces, all while we waited for the Pope. Finally at 11:00am the parade began. Stationed at the end of the parade we heard sections of people cheer as he drove past them, which kept building the anticipation. As the Pope mobile finally came around the corner of Constitution Avenue onto 15thStreet the crowd in front of us erupted into cheers. Everyone threw up their arms, waved flags, and shouted for Francis. I was so focused on making sure the camera angle was high enough, checking the focus, and following the Pope mobile that I didn’t get to see the man himself with my own eyes. But in the end I got a great shot, so that’s all that really matters.
