Last week Double R,alongside Lion’s Share Communications, hosted the D.C. Premiere of CinemAbility. A documentary that looks at how people with disabilities have been portrayed in film and television throughout history. During the days leading up to our first big event, our job was to spread the word and get the theatre filled. Rosemary explicitly stated several times “If the theater isn’t filled, the Interns get killed!” She was joking of course but still… So we buckled down and did everything in our power. This meant reaching out to THOUSANDS of organizations, individuals and media outlets. Okay, I may be exaggerating a bit but after a while it started to feel like that. Promoting an event really isn’t an easy task and you might get discouraged every once in a while. But, the trick is to keep going and keep faith. We have a saying in Belgium that goes “A “no” you have but you can always get a “yes””.
The day of the event the whole team was excited and very curious about who would show up and how the night would go. Megan and I were taking care of the ticket sales and checking people in at the door. This was so much fun! I even had a bit of a realization; event planning is definitely a career path that I would like to explore. Ever since graduating high school I have been struggling with trying to figure out what I want to do so – Yay!
After we took care of the guests, we joined everyone in the theatre and enjoyed the movie. I can honestly say I liked it a lot. I was surprised by the amount of movies and TV shows that address disabilities. Some of the scenes gave me that feeling as if I could take on anything. It really gave me a better and broader understanding of this topic.
