Battle Scars

  • admin
“Sudan security agents arrest journalist.”
“Gunmen attack journalist in Somali capital.”
“Venezuela press freedoms at risk, press group warns.”
These are just a few of the headlines that underscore repressive regimes.
It was only last night when I went to shoot video for the Peter Mackler Awards for Courageous and Ethical Journalism with the rest of the Double R Productions team that I realized we take freedom of press for granted here in the US. This basic right is not even a privilege in other, less fortunate countries.
“We’re honoring journalists who have the courage to stand up to oppressing regime, to continue doing their job day in and day out no matter what the risk to their own safety and uh, the safety of their family,” said the president of The Peter Mackler Awards, Catherine Antoine.  And this year’s awards ceremony recognized Asma Shirazi, the first female war correspondent in Pakistan. Despite the threats and risks, despite the heartbreaking war stories, and despite the battle scars, Shirazi demonstrated courage and determination in seeking and speaking the truth.

We shot video, spoke to journalists, and captured a great event. And for that, I am proud to be working with Double R Productions, a firm that strongly stands behind The Peter Mackler Awards’ message.
