At Double R, my first lesson was the 7 P’s of production: Prior Proper Planning Prevents Piss Poor Production. After that lesson, Kirby and I have been privileged to work with wonderful clients at Double R, assisting on shoots and events. However, the 7 P’s of production were most useful for our pro bono video project with Veterans On The Rise (VOTR). This organization is dedicated to helping homeless veterans rebuild their lives. Double R puts the tools in our hands so we can provide our production services to help a good cause. Ironically, a day of hauling around 10 pounds of equipment in 90-degree weather turned out to be the best day on the job.
Out of the office and into the unknown, Kirby and I arrived early to meet the staff and set up the camera equipment. We had been preparing for weeks, editing call sheets, and conducting conference calls. The day was action-packed. We captured daily routines, yoga sessions, and facility tours. For me, the most exciting part was recording the staff interviews. With the lights shining and camera focused, I asked questions and carried a conversation with the interesting and hard working members of VOTR.
As the day came to a close, I reflected on the 7 P’s of Productions. I credit our successful day to efficiently planning. In addition to utilizing the 7 P’s, I learned the importance of purpose. Working with VOTR, I witnessed their dedication and celebrated their success. Now Kirby and I continue with the project, drafting scripts and reviewing footage. I was honored to be welcomed into the heart of VOTR and I look forward to sharing their message. The terrifying and equally satisfying day of producing, recording, and interviewing is an experience I will carry with me moving forward.
