Covering a news event in Washington D.C. is nothing like covering a news event in Lock Haven. Sure setting up shots is the same, and interviewing is similar too but boy did Brittany, Rory and I have our hands full during the Rally for Solidarity with the Women of Wal-Mart.
Our mission:
Go out and cover the rally in an unbiased way and get both sides of the story.
In D.C. that is easier said then done! Because this was an intern assignment we set out with tripod, camera and all the recording necessities in hand…
No literally in hand…and then on to the metro!
We arrived in front of the steps of the Supreme Court and set up shop. At first we were worried because no rally was to be found, but eventually the crowd started to gather. We filmed from various angles and conducted several interviews, digging always for raw emotion that can only be captured in the moment.
After the rally it was time to find the other side of our story. Off to the U.S. Department of Commerce we went, rotating equipment between the three of us because…it was heavy! Rory went inside to see if we could get an interview, but no luck. They declined to comment and a security guard came out because we were asking employees exiting the building for an interview.
After getting some b-roll to work with in editing it was time to head back and create the finished story that we set out to capture that morning. Being out there on the field, sweaty, hungry blisters and all I realized that I am where I belong, and although I’ll have to work hard to get where I want to be someday, I can’t imagine myself doing anything else.
