We are now halfway through our second week of interning at Double R Productions and completed our first group video today using the DV cam. The task was straightforward: create a story and then go out into the world and film it. No frills, no edits, no second takes. However, I was still intimidated by all the buttons and cords attached to the camera and the daunting task of setting up the tripod just right. I can barely work the camera in my cell phone! Yet in spite of of my inexperience, we had a great experience filming around a very snowy Dupont Circle and my camera woes were soon replaced with another fear: “Man on the Street” interviews.
I’m a fairly social person but the minute someone stops me on the sidewalk I drop my head and pick up my pace. Although I liked the idea of “Man on the Street,” I was wary about finding cooperating individuals throughout the hustle and bustle of DC. Why would anyone stop on a street corner to chat with three interns and a camera? Fortunately I was wrong! Despite the perpetually grey atmosphere of the city, the people we encountered were actually quite friendly. Some even continued to talk into the camera after answering my question! We returned triumphantly to the Double R office with more than enough footage and cannot wait to see the final product next week!
I wish I had found these interview tips to calm my nerves before the shoot!
