With only sixteen workdays left, my gears are in overdrive. We’ve learned the basics from call sheets to makeup, scripts to video editing, and so much more. Hiwot and I turned out to be really motivated Production Assistants.
Before coming to DC to intern at Double R I wanted to learn a lot. I hoped to gain experience that I could take with me into the field of broadcast journalism and I got even more than that. Skills like on-camera etiquette and video editing techniques are just a few that stand out. Moreover, the times that meant the most to me were the connections and the moments I’ve had with the Double R staff and our clients.
The office became a place that felt like home, a safe haven where I could express what I wanted to do with digital media journalism and why. These fifteen weeks had both ups and downs that only made me more confident as an intern and future employee. For example when I did my first voice over, I naturally had a strong voice but there were a few things I still needed to work on.
“You’ve got to do better than that if you want to make it my dear,” Rosemary would say to me with a stern voice.
At first those words seemed condescending but they stuck with me. I have to be better. And those words changed the perspective I had in the beginning. There’s no time to settle in the production and broadcasting industry, you constantly have to try and exceed the norm and sharpen the talents you already have.
Double R was a blast but now its time to take my talents back to The University of Massachusetts!
