Practice Makes Perfect!

  • admin

A new batch of interns has arrived at Double R Productions!  We are a very international crowd, representing three continents! There’s Miga from Mongolia who studies in Japan, Megan from New Jersey and me, Shari, born and raised in Belgium.

On our second day here at Double R, we tagged along with Rosemary, Catherine and Paul to a media-training event for the American Trucking Associations (ATA) in Virginia. I had never been to a media training so this was all new to me. We woke up very early in the morning to meet at Double R, load the equipment in the car, and drive to Virginia.

The three of us took on different tasks, which made this a very good learning experience for each of us. I applied makeup and served as “Vana White” for a moment,  drawing “Bessie the cow”, a technique Rosemary uses to teach people how to tell a story and actually make it interesting. Miga took photographs and Megan took charge of the Power Point presentation. So after this experience we can actually call ourselves production assistants!

The ATA representatives arrived and Rosemary got cracking. Basically the training is all about how to present yourself and how to be a good public speaker. This is a very important part of these men’s jobs since they are the faces of their companies and they need to know how to dress properly, give speeches, and react to difficult questions at press conferences. Catherine ran the prompter, a device that prompts speech text so participants can read off of it.

Rosemary definitely led the show and she just filled the room with energy and enthusiasm. She divided her presentation into teaching and training. Key here: practice makes perfect.

The most important lesson for me today was the realization that these men, who have had these big jobs for quite a long time now, still get nervous when it comes to public speaking. On our way back to the office we stopped for lunch and relaxed before diving back into our work day. While at the restaurant Rosemary passed down some great advice from her mother regarding public speaking: “Don’t think about yourself, think about your audience and you’ll be fine.”
