As a broadcast journalism major, my experience reporting the Supreme Court’s ruling of the Defense of Marriage Act and Proposition 8 unconstitutional proved to be a great opportunity. I learned more about video editing and reporting under a news deadline.
These laws defined marriage as a union between a man and a woman. By striking them down, same-sex marriage will be recognized, and homosexual married couples will be given equal protection as heterosexual married couples.
I felt excited to be in D.C. for this decision because it will affect many Americans and privileged to be able to cover this story on the steps of the Supreme Court. Supporters and opponents gathered around the Court to express their opinion. The intern team and I interviewed both sides. It is a divisive issue in our country, and it was a great learning experience to hear the variety of perspectives.
