Things have been quite busy here at Double R as we begin production for a 20-year anniversary video for Relman, Dane & Colfax (RDC). RDC is a law firm here in Washington, DC that specializes in civil rights cases. They have covered issues with fair housing, education, employment, and public accommodations. Partners of the firm have chosen Double R to produce this piece, which will highlight their successful efforts in progressing civil rights over the last 20 years.
As an intern, I have had the privilege of assisting in a couple different ways. One of my first assignments was to help gather the initial information for previous cases they’ve won. This week we started to film the various interviewees involved with the law firm. One of the interviewees is Thomas Perez, chairmen of the Democratic National Committee. Despite all the federal offices being shut down due to a snow day, it did not stop the Double R crew from getting a great interview with Perez. As a production assistant, I get to learn and experience what a professional interview entails. This includes the proper sit-down interview set up, specific lighting positions, how to conduct an interview, and noting the magic moments or “bites” from the interviewee. Being able to work on set with the former Secretary of Labor under Obama was definitely a highlight of my experience so far.
Aside from the work with RDC, Quinton, Inhye, and I were able to attend a rally to protest President Trump’s wall and recent declaration of a national emergency. We filmed the rally and interviewed a few protestors to produce a news story. This was a valuable experience because I covered the rally as a reporter and learned how to construct a story from scratch. It also gave me the opportunity to be among highly determined people who share my view in needing a change with our current administration. I have never produced a news package and can truly say I am proud of the final product.
