The Perk of Being a Wallflower
Living in Washington DC, the nation’s capital means it’s critical to stay on top of the news. Moreover, as our Chief-Cook-and-Bottle-Washer warned, we NEED to cover at least one news story in order to complete this internship with tremendous success.
We started July with a hard-news project. After 54 years, the United States announced the agreement to reestablish Diplomatic relations with the Republic of Cuba and reopen embassies in the respective countries. Three of us immediately caught the bus to the Interest Section- a future location of Cuba’s Embassy. Well as they say, seeing is believing. I never imagined 30-seconds news coverage would have required that much hard work and patience. We stationed in front of the Interest Section for nearly 3 hours, like wallflowers, waiting for something significant. Rarely pedestrians passed by. Due to the limited circumstance, we failed to get interviews that present both sides of the story.
Although this news coverage wasn’t as promising as we expected, the experience taught us how to play the roles of news reporters. Being a wallflower has its perks. Well, as a Vietnamese idiom says, “a day on the road gains you a sieve’s worth of wisdom”.
