“What have I done?”
That was the only thought that floated through my mind as I stood at the bottom of the tallest escalator I have ever seen, shivering from the freezing temperatures. In those moments, coming to a strange city far from my home in Atlanta seemed like a very stupid idea.
I dragged myself up the rickety stairs to the Double R Office suite, rang the doorbell, and was greeted by color, cows, and flying pigs.
No joke.
The office was warm and welcoming, full of greens and blues and yellows and stuffed animals, and it felt like an artist’s place—a creative place. The staff greeted us just as warmly, stating how happy they were to have us here, and Catherine, the intern supervisor, gave us a tour of the office. When I got to the intern office and saw the stuffed cow perched on the lamp next to my desk, I knew I was in the right place.
Rosemary sat us down to show us some of what we would be working on over the course of the semester, and soon my head was spinning with both excitement and nervousness about all the projects we would get to be a part of.
The pace hasn’t slowed down since.
Yesterday, McKenzie, David, and I spent hours roaming around the Dupont area on a scavenger hunt, looking for buildings we would be frequenting often. We stopped at the bank, Rosemary’s apartment building, and a little bakery called Firehook, to name a few. Later on, I spent another hour trying to find the post office for an actual delivery. At least we got to know the area really well!
In addition to the scavenger hunt, there has been a continuous flurry of activity both in and out of the office and already we have gotten experience making labels, printing copies, answering telephones, and learning the basics of video editing with AVID. It is going to be a crazy semester, but I’m positive that I’ll enjoy it immensely.
After all, it’s hard to be depressed when a stuffed cow is chilling on your lamp and flying pigs are hanging from the ceiling.
